Liebes Bilderbuch

Dear Picture Diary,

I won’t say too much today.

The days are flying by, the seasons are changing, and my holiday is just around the corner. I’m so excited!

Discovering a new country and a new culture. A little break from everyday life. Freedom, the sea, and a glass of wine every now and then. Living by the motto: No plans and a little tipsy. Love it.

For everyone who isn’t going on holiday and can’t, shouldn’t, isn’t allowed to, or simply doesn’t want to come and visit me (okay, I wouldn’t be happy about that last one), I’ve put together a few impressions of what life looks like around here.

So, I started at my apartment, spent two hours wandering around my hood, and photographed whatever caught my eye along the way. Places, streets, little corners and favourite spots where I regularly hang out. A little glimpse into my everyday life. Basically, a walk through my Amsterdam for everyone who can’t be here to wander the streets with me.

Oh, and by the way, my apartment always looks exactly like this. Obviously, I didn’t tidy up especially for the photos, move things out of the way, or make anything look prettier than it normally does.

I would never do such a thing.
Die Wohnung

Das ist meine tolle 2-Zimmer Wohnung, im 1. Stock an der Vrolikstraat.
The Apartment

This is my lovely two-room apartment on the 1st floor of a building on Vrolikstraat.

The Street

Vrolikstraat. A lovely, green street in the east of Amsterdam. It’s quite long and has a slightly alternative, cosy, and welcoming charm.

The residents lovingly take care of the little flower beds and plants in front of their homes, while flags and fairy lights hang from the balconies. Everything feels a little colourful, lively, and wonderfully peaceful at the same time.

The Neighbourhood

Amsterdam East has so much to offer, with countless cafés, restaurants, parks, and lovely places to go for a walk.

Weesperzijde is a street right along the Amstel River. The houses have such beautiful facades that I can hardly ever resist taking a photo. I love strolling along here, soaking up the atmosphere, and occasionally settling down at one of the cafés to just sit, relax, and watch the world go by.

The Cafés / The Bars

Bar Bukowski, BLEND Coffee & Wine, Bica Café, and Nomad. These are my four absolute favourite spots for a cappuccino or a beer. All just around the corner, all incredibly cosy and welcoming. Perfect for a quick coffee, an after-work beer, or simply sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying life a little.

The Shopping

Just around the corner, there’s a little shopping area called Oostpoort. Here you’ll find all the typical Dutch stores: flower shops, Albert Heijn, HEMA, and Rituals. But also Douglas, souvenirs, shoes, clothes, and pretty much everything you do (or don’t) need.

You won’t find many of the big shopping chains here. Instead, there are smaller shops and a few hidden gems. It’s a place I love wandering around, even when I don’t actually need anything.

The Park

Just three minutes from my apartment is Oosterpark. As soon as the sun comes out, the park comes to life (although the runners are out showing off their skills even when it’s raining). Guitar players provide the background music, picnic blankets are spread out, and people are reading, chatting, picnicking, and simply enjoying the good life. A wonderful place to unwind and let your mind wander.

Unfortunately, the park also shows its less charming side in the evenings. That’s when this idyllic green oasis turns into a rather unwelcoming place, known for its shady characters and not-so-legal activities.

The Gym (Gyn)

Apart from work, this is probably the place where I spend most of my time. The wonderful Vondelgym Oost.

CrossFit, Hyrox, Boxing, Yoga, Open Gym, and Mobility. You’ll find everything a fitness enthusiast could wish for to get those endorphins flowing, work up a proper sweat, and push yourself to your limits.

The facilities might not exactly be top-notch, but the CrossFit, Hyrox, and Yoga classes are super cool, and the coaches are amazing. A place where I regularly choose to torture myself voluntarily and still go home feeling happy and satisfied every single time (or at least most of the time).

The City Centre

The heart of Amsterdam. Beautiful canals, crooked houses, cobblestone streets, charming bridges, countless little alleyways, cafés, restaurants, and of course, plenty of shopping opportunities.

There’s always something going on, something new to discover around every corner, and even after almost eight months, I still feel like I’ve only seen about 20% of this city.

PS: Okay, the photos of the city centre are a little older. But you can’t seriously expect me to walk around for five hours until my feet are killing me. This blog is free, after all.
Und zu guter letzt:

Das Fahrrad

Ich habe das süsseste Fahrrad. Punkt
And last but not least:

The Bike

I have the cutest bike. Period.

And that’s about it. A little glimpse into my Amsterdam adventure.

Maybe you now have a slightly better idea of where I spend my time around here and why this city has become so close to my heart.

And if you now feel like coming to see it all for yourself, you know where to find me.
