Liebes Tagebuch

Gute Nacht.

PS: IKEA, bitte bringe morgen wie verabredet NACH 16.00 Uhr mein Bett und mein Sofa. Ich bin bereit für eine erwachsene Schlafsituation.

The first day at work

Dear Diary

Today was my first official day at my new company in Amsterdam.

I was very nervous. Even though I’d already had the chance to meet (and love) my team in person, I was still incredibly excited and restless. My head knew everything was going to be fine. My heart rate wasn’t quite convinced yet.

Meeting time was 9:15 a.m. Zero nine fifteen. Normal for some people. Biologically speaking, lunchtime for me. I’m still trying to figure out whether I’ll adapt or whether Amsterdam will have to get used to my 5:30 a.m. energy. We’ll leave that open for now.

The moment I was picked up at the entrance, I knew: This. This was the right decision.

I was hugged. Everyone was happy to see me. Warm. Genuine. And every single person I met had nothing but good things to say about the company.

First things first, there was a welcome-and-get-to-know-each-other coffee. LOVE IT. Then we got information about the company and IT, followed by Office Operations explaining all the administrative stuff like holidays, sick leave, office attendance, etc.

The office has a total start-up vibe: open space, open kitchen, lounges, sofas, glass walls. Lots of light. Lots of space. Lots of “just sit somewhere and work wherever you want”. LOVE IT.

And now, a quick message to Switzerland:

There’s muesli, oats, dried fruit, fresh fruit, nuts, chocolate, crisps, bars, everything you need to make toasties, yoghurt, Skyr, coffee, soft drinks and various other temptations.
For free. At no cost. Gratis.
I repeat: FREE.

For a moment, I wondered whether I’d started a new job or accidentally checked into a very well-disguised all-inclusive resort.

I can’t complain about my commute either (as long as there are no delays): one stop by train or four stops by metro to Amsterdam Centraal. About 5 to 7 minutes either way. Plus a 5–10 minute walk before and after. By bike, it would take around 15 minutes. I’ll do that once I’ve bought one and officially become part of the Dutch population.

I walked home with a smile on my face.
Not the polite kind of smile.
The real one.

It feels good.
It feels right.

Tomorrow, I’ve booked myself into the gym before work.
Firstly, because I can’t possibly sleep in until 9:15 a.m. again.
Secondly, because the snack section has some seriously ambitious plans for me.

Good night.

PS: IKEA, please deliver my bed and sofa tomorrow AFTER 4 p.m., as agreed. I’m ready for an adult sleeping situation.
